Days 1-5

I googled “beginner roller skating tutorial” and found That Nicole Fiore’s YouTube channel and her 5-part beginner lesson series. I faithfully followed each lesson. I probably puttered around the apartment, skating 15-20 min per day, following 1 lesson per day. It was a good way to dip my toe in the water and get exposure to a potpourri of different skating elements, but if I had to do it again, I would have started with Dirty Deborah Harry’s lessons because the progression from lesson to lesson is more foundational and goes more deep into core concepts like weight transfer, edges, and posture.

Nicole’s 3rd class, for example, introduces jumping and hopping–I was not ready for that at all. My feet promptly flew out from under me, and I landed squarely on my butt, resulting in some hard whiplash! That is not to say that Nicole’s tutorials aren’t helpful because they are! I have been finding it more helpful to follow Dirty Deborah’s lesson progression (which might spend a whole lesson on one thing at a time) and supplement concepts along the way with tutorials from others.

Anyhow, below are some clips from my first 5 days of skating. I mostly just stuck to skating in our tiny NYC apartment with our two dogs roaming around. I was very nervous about toppling our 60 inch TV or collapsing onto the sharp corners of my furniture!

Day 5 (I had no business trying to do a two foot spin!):
